MACCSol Research Project Update

Friday, January 28th, 2011

The MACCSol commercialisation

On November 28th 2013, the launch of the MACCSol commercialisation was performed by Mr Brian Hayes TD, the Irish Minister of State for Public Service Reform. Also in attendance was Mr Barry Cowen, TD and Ms Marcella Corcoran Kennedy TD, accompanied by representatives of the Europe wide development consortium for the project. The event was also attended by many representatives of the power industry to witness technical history being made in Tullamore.

Background:
The generation of power using solar radiation, has the potential to provide a significant portion of the EU’s renewable energy targets. A number of large European and international initiatives have targeted vast desert areas of the Middle East and North Africa for the deployment of CSP (concentrated Solar Power).

Solar power generation from these regions has the potential to provide a quarter of the EU’s total renewable energy target by 2020. The European CSP industry has identified the shortage of water to cool the condensers of the CSP plants as being a significant barrier to CSP’s deployment. Efficient and cost effective air cooled condenser technologies are required, as current air cooled condenser technologies are highly inefficient. Through its work in the power industry, RR Projects realised that it had significant expertise to bring to this challenge.

This requirement was recognised in an EU Energy call (FP7-ENERGY-2010-1) under a heading titled “Dry cooling methods for multi-MW sized concentrated solar power plants”. In partnership with The Stokes Institute in the University of Limerick in Ireland, a successful proposal to this call was achieved.

The development of condenser cooling techniques which do not consume water is critical to the success in the emergence of CSP. The adaptation of air cooling methodologies is the most obvious solution to this problem & the main technical objective of the MACCSol project. A Europe-wide consortium was formed to address this challenge and with the support of EU funding, the project has now reached the significant point of being commercialised.

In order to verify the benefits of the technology at an industrial scale, and to demonstrate these benefits to potential customers of the technology, a technology demonstrator has been manufactured by RR Projects in Tullamore. Following FAT, this unit has been installed in an Australian CSP plant near Sidney which is owned and developed by Vast Solar Pty Limited. This is an opportunity for the power sector to witness first hand this development which is set to revolutionise the industry.

Bord Gáis Whitegate Independent Power Plant, Whitegate, Co. Cork, Ireland

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

RR Projects has been involved on this project from the construction commencement in 2008 being contracted to erect and assemble the Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) and the Fin Fan Cooler. The Fin Fan Cooler was installed by our team in less than 2 weeks.

The ACC at this site was manufactured by SPX.  It has 4 streets with 5 fans per street. The work of erecting the ACC was completed and commissioned on schedule.

This project was managed by our most senior site supervisor and two of our mechanical engineers.

We had on site a full time welding engineer was our project manager, where he applied Code section 9, EN ISO 15614 welding standards which ensured the purity of pipe-work systems.

Our project manager whilst managing the everyday running of the project drove our QA policy and procedures. Activities included:

  • Filter House: Mechanical assembly
  • Inlet Duct: Installation
  • Fin Fan Cooler:  Mechanical assembly
  • Air Cooled Condenser:  Mechanical assembly
  • Commissioning Support: Provided 25 personnel to the Project Commissioning manager who assisted in the Pre-commissioning and Start-up of the plant

RR Projects

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

RR Projects Limited is the parent company whose purpose built corporate offices are at Parsons House, 56 Axis Business Park, Tullamore, Co Offaly, R35K744 in Ireland. Founded to meet the growing mechanical and electrical engineering market in Ireland, the company has expanded to meet the international needs of the Power and Oil & Gas sectors. This came about following the successful delivery of installations in Ireland for multinational organisations, who now engage RR Projects Internationally.

Our corporate headquarters, Parsons House, is named in the memory of Sir Charles Parsons (13 June 1854 – 11 February 1931) who was local engineer, best known for his invention of the steam turbine. The ancestral home of Charles Parsons is at Birr Castle, just 40 Km from RR Projects in Tullamore.  It houses a museum detailing the contribution that the Parsons family have made to the fields of science and engineering, with part of the museum dedicated to the engineering work of Charles Parsons. (In July 2017, A new €2 million radio telescope has been officially turned on at Birr Castle. The Irish Low Frequency Array, or I-LOFAR, is part of a €150 million network of radio telescope stations spread across seven European countries).

Because of our proximity to the Parsons historic home and the business we are in, we felt it appropriate to name our corporate offices in his name.
